C.R.A.S.E.L. and R.U.L.E.R. School
CRASEL
Culturally-Responsive and Affirming Social-Emotional Leadership (CRASEL) is an approach for school leaders and students that meets the needs of the school community by raising racial and cultural self-awareness. It us a district-wide initiative developed through dissertation research conducted by Dr. Dawn Brooks-DeCosta, Deputy Superintendent of Harlem Community School District 5. reIt raises expectations while also meeting the social and emotional needs of individual students through positive relationship building.
RULER is an approach to social and emotional learning (SEL) that teaches emotional intelligence to people of all ages, with the goal of creating a better society.
Our school, PS 123 Mahalia Jackson community is a CRASEL school. All our staff and students were trained and are actively practicing CRASEL methodologies.
RULER
We are also a RULER school.
RULER is an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence:
Recognizing emotions in oneself and others
Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions
Labeling emotions with a nuanced vocabulary
Expressing emotions in accordance with cultural norms and social context
Regulating emotions with helpful strategies
The RULER Tools
RULER skills have four core tools which the PS 123 community of school leaders, teachers, staff, students and families use:
- Charter: Builds and sustains positive emotions by creating norms for how students want to feel.
- Mood Meter: Supports self- and social awareness and develops a vocabulary of emotions and strategies for controlling them..
- Meta-Moment: Provides a process for responding to emotional situations with strategies.
- Blueprint: Supports the development of empathy and conflict resolution skills.
